A safe return to scientific and technical work must center on the question of risk. Assessing relative levels of risk has been a longstanding center of excellence within design, construction, and operations—think of the intimate relationship between model building codes, jobsite safety, and best practices and protocols during building commissioning as it approaches the standard of occupancy. Because of this, design that begins with detailed physical assessment and the mitigation of deficiencies is in many respects adjunct to the broader epidemiological inquiry into the propagation of COVID-19 in the human population. How can building owners, scientific practice leaders, and operations experts leverage existing professional practice principles in assessing how to use their resources wisely, and to continue their work safely and sustainably?
