This course provides hands-on (laboratory-based) experience in the sample preparation and purification techniques used in High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of biological samples for trace levels of drug and pesticide residues. Students will perform standard preparation, reagent preparation, sample extractions and typical purification procedures (liquid-liquid partitioning and solid-phase extraction); they will also calibrate an HPLC system using both manual injection and an automatic injection system and use HPLC methods developed for determining trace levels of organic contaminants in water, milk and food samples.
